I’m calling it Feb is definitely the new Jan! I have been lapping up my holidays this year and as January is coming to a close and the more full my calendar becomes so does the realisation that the holidays are coming to an end..even though I have been back at mahi for a few weeks now lol😆.
Anyyyway, regardless of all that I think its safe to say that I have been slaaaacking on this blog. I always have good intentions and even have some posts ready but to say 2023 has been crazy is probably an understatement lol…but that could also be due the fact that I was not keeping myself organised at all lol.
After 3 years of being back here it makes me laugh thinking about the conversations we had when contemplating moving back and my biggest thing was how easily bored I can become and in a big city with so much to do, that was never really an issue but in a small town with not so much to do (so I thought) it might be an issue lol but I can confidently say that I am definitely a lot busier here then I was in Sydney haha.
After looking through my photos of 2023, there has been a lot of fun times. Starting the year off with a roadie to Te Matatini, Homegrown in wellington (both mentioned A New Zealand Summer), The beginning of Te Ngare ō Turongo, Ngā Iti Rearea ki Te Manakuratahi, Hanana Kohanga Reo’s 40th Huritau, a looooot of creating which in turn means a lot of late nights in the shed LOL, celebrating those with us and those no longer here and somehow I managed to fit all of this around my actual 9-5 job LOL.
So here it is, a recap of my 2023 ✌🏽
Happy New Year to you all and here is to 2024, wishing everyone and their families a year of health, happiness and doing all the things you love✌🏽
During lockdown in 2020 when we all had so much free time on our hands LOL I wanted to try out my hand in customising AF1’s after seeing a few pairs online that I liked.
The first pair that I customised was just a worn pair of white AF1’s and I used some acrylic paint that I already had.
Once I had done my “practice” pair, I decided to try and customise a little pair for my niece’s birthday and they actually turned out so cute!!
Instead of photos, I had actually taken videos of how I did it so thought I would edit them together and upload that as something a little different 😉
Over the last 3 years, I have customised quite a few pairs for different people and haven’t really shared them anywhere before lol…so here are a few pics of those while I am at it!
I also did a few DIY customs where I added vinyl onto the shoes and gave little tubs of paint + brushes to my nieces and nephews and they painted the shoes themselves then pulled the vinyl off when finished giving you the outline of the pictures!
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this different structure of posts cos if so I will definitely think about putting a few videos in here and there in the future ☺️
Six months or so after moving here my nephew Jay turned the big 5! As a lover of alll animals, I knew a Barnyard Bash was the perfect party theme for him.
If you had read my old blog (rip kodiieebear-xo.com) then you know that I looove going the extra mile for my nieces and nephews birthday’s (some would say “extravagant” 🙄🤣) and Jay’s was no exception lol.
Luckily for me, there was no hauling suitcases crammed with birthday decorations on the plane since I was already home and that definitely made things soo much easier! After a few days of scrolling through Pinterest and Google Images I came up with an idea of what I wanted it to look like and thats when the many shopping trips begun LOL!
Once I had decided on the barnyard bash theme, my first step was to create a birthday invitation. I had seen a TikTok where someone had used their Cricut to cut out their wedding invitation and I used that same concept but changed it up to fit the theme.
I started with drawing Jay into a cartoon character on my iPad using Procreate (if I’m drawing something, it’s always on Procreate lol) which turned out super cute.
I drew a tractor and had him sitting on there for the front of the invitation and then added a barn for some space to put the party details.
Using my drawings, some sticker paper and brown card – I came up with the below invitation, I love how it turned out and it gave me so many ideas for future invitations 😆
I used the drawing that I did for the invitation and changed it up a bit to create stickers for the loot bags, chocolate coins, milk bottles and colouring books.
Speaking of loot bags, for these we went pretty simple but on theme of course. I bought some plain brown bags, added the sticker to them and then filled them with a personalised colouring book, animal themed crayons and paddle-ball toy, bouncy balls, a small stuffed animal, lollies and a few other bits and pieces.
We also organised a few games for the kids to play and added huge bowls of lollies for them to add to their loot bag when they finished playing.
The games are always the hardest to come up with, especially when you are trying to keep on theme and catering to about 50 kids of all different ages LOL.
We had the standard ring toss, duck pond and throwing an apple into the mouth of the pig (Shout out to ChaChi and Hine for their painting skills and making the pig game) but my favourites of all the game were the 2 new ones we came up with – Egg Hunt and Car Race!
The Egg Hunt game was a babies sized pool filled with straw and feathers, then I had filled plastic eggs with bouncy balls, candy and little toys and hid them within the pool. The kids had so much fun searching for treasures!
Race Car was one that I knew my nephews would like. My dad bought home a thin piece of ply wood and we painted 3 tracks on it and then filled in the blank spaces with fake grass. I used my Cricut to print out a start and finish and added them to the board as well. We initially wanted to use pull back tractors but we couldn’t find any so ended up using pull back cars instead which worked just as well!
The night before the birthday, we were busily gluing literally 100s of photos to another piece of plywood into the shape of a 5. I had painted the board red beforehand so it would blend in with the rest of the decorations.
We used it as a place for everyone to take photos so added a garland of red, white and cow patterned balloons and Jay’s name in big helium balloons.
The tables (both cake and kids tables) are always so fun to decorate. I had the idea of creating little farm scenes down the middle of the kids table using different sized plastic animals, fake grass and burlap table runners.
We then used red and white checked table cloths with matching napkins and wooden plates and cutlery. We also had the little milk bottles sitting next to the plate with a red and white straw. It all came together so nicely and looked soooo good together!!
Once we have decorated the kids table, I realised that we had some large animal helium balloons so we blew them up, added a string and then I glued the end of the string into a few of the larger plastic animals mouths so it looked like they were holding them which I thought was suuuuper cute!!
The cake table was so special as we had a photo of Jay’s uncle who had recently passed away on the table so he could celebrate with everyone.
We decided to do a dessert grazing table around the photo. My sister bought a whole heap of different cakes, slices etc from her co-worker which we scattered all over the table with lollies and lots of Jay’s favourite snacks.
For the cake, we added a smaller trestle table on top of the grazing table. Jay’s favourite cake of all time is a sponge cake and the one my sister got was suuuper delicious! I added the cake topper (which I made), some animal candles and a mini 5 balloon.
Behind the cake table we had a barn as the backdrop. Another shout out to ChaChi for doing the barn! We used the Cricut for the words and then ChaChi painted the rest of the barn and the little animals at the bottom.
The backdrop bought the whole cake table together and I loved it!
If you know, then you know my MOST favourite part to come up with ideas for these parties are of course the present area! This present area was probably one of my favourite ones I have created so far.
We went to a gardening shop and bought one of those mini garden fences and placed it in a circle. Then we added a whole heap of straw and a couple of stuffed animals in there to make it look like a pen. It looked soooo cute, although we probably didnt make it big enough because the presents were overflowing by the end LOL.
To top it all off, in true Nanny and Koko style of course Jay had the ice cream truck turn up to his party which all the kids flocked too! Jay was allowed to help make the ice creams and make one for himself too.
Happy 5th Birthday our Jay Babyyy (even though you are literally 7 this year cos I’m writing this so late LOOOOL), hope your barnyard bash was everything you wanted and more!!
Shout out to my sister for always letting me and my ideas run wild and a special shout out going to the Shed Crew for all those late night sticker parties, painting parties and just always helping with whatever you can! Ya’ll the real MVP’s 😜
Ahhhh a New Zealand summer 😍 definitely one of the best seasons to explore our beautiful country and spend all day and evening chilling at one of the many beaches!
The summer before last, we took a camping trip to Ruakaka, stopping in the most beautiful spots!
Now, it was definitely my first time camping since I was a child so there was some slight hesitation on my part but it ended up being so much fun and the views from the our tents were next level 🤗
Our first stop was in Taupo at a freedom camping ground called Reid’s Farm aaaand we loved it so much we stopped there on the way back as well and did a float down the Waikato River for our Braxton-Marlee’s birthday (and yes, even Puku and Kata came on the float!) which was so much fun!
Although I have so many photos from Reid’s Farm, the photos do not do it any justice! The water was sooo beautifully clear and fresh and was only a few metres away from the campground!
We spent alllll day swimming while we were there and its definitely a frequent stop when going through Taupo now!
In Ruakaka we were lucky enough to get a prime spot by camping in Monz’ uncles front yard which was literally a few steps away from the water. We spent a few days there swimming and exploring the area and spent the nights in front of a bon fire making s’mores and watching outdoor movies.
On our way home we stopped off at Matapouri Bay and found us a spot right on the beachfront! The nights were so clear and we could see Matariki perfectly so ended up spending the night watching the stars and the girls learnt all about the stars of Matariki from Aunty Kelk 🥰
As you can imagine we passed so many beautiful spots on our travels so they definitely deserve a mention as well 😉
Last summer we spent many a days and evenings at the beach. Teaching the kids how to jump waves and find pipi’s, had picnics, did lots of sunbathing, swimming and more swimming!
The end of Feb (and the week of my birthday) was spent in Auckland at Te Matatini 2023 and what an experience it was! I haven’t been to a Matatini since high school and two of our cousins hadn’t attended one at all so it was definitely a good time. One of my cousins bought his family over from Sydney as well so we were able to fiiiinally meet our nephew Rongo (one year later!!).
We had whanau and friends performing in different groups across the 3 days and just being there and basking in and amongst all the māoritanga was eeeeverything and a huge reminder of why I moved home in the first place.
Our summer ended with Homegrown in Wellington, it was definitely a good time! How could it not be though? Good music, drinking and dancing the day and night away and good vibes 👌🏽 although getting from stage to stage was pretty hectic LOL
So its official, summers in NZ are the absolute best!! The weather is perfect, the night skies are breathtaking but the company….makes it all that much better 😜
Writing the first blog post is always the hardest, you are never quite sure how to jump into it and although I have done this before (R.I.P Kodiieebear-xo.com) it sure doesn’t make it any easier!
But what will make it easier is if I sum the last…literally two years (😲) up in photos instead. We have done some fun things over the last couple of years and I have loots of photos to share so we may dive deeper into some things in future posts!
For now, enjoy the ride 😅

But making so many memories together
As you can see the last couple of years have been full on. Shed Crew went on countless adventures, ChaChi entering Miromoda and making it to NZFW22, decorated and celebrated so many birthdays, and finally unveiled our Mums.
Coming back home after 14 years in Sydney has been a breath of fresh air and although it has mostly been filled with sooo many laughs, celebrations and good vibes, we also lost too many people we love..
